Wine
News
For years
Japanese consumers have enjoyed the convenience of buying beer, wine
and spirits from vending machines. Soon, Pennsylvania wine lovers may
have the opportunity to purchase wine without human contact.
Pennsylvania’s Liquor Control Board is soliciting proposals from
vending machine companies to install 100 wine kiosks across the state
in grocery stores and malls. Storing 500 bottles of a dozen different
wines, the machines would allow customers to buy wine without going
to one of the state-owned liquor stores.
Critics of the operation fear this being a big temptation for kids,
but the liquor board claims that all machines will be equipped with
security measures. Customers will need to register before they can use
the machines, which will perform a fingerprint scan before dispensing
the goods!
Robert
Mondavi
(1913-2008)
Robert Mondavi
was one of the most influential and admired winemakers in California.
He died at 9am on Friday May 16th, 2008.
Mr. Mondavi is credited with almost single-handedly putting California
wines front and center on the world stage. In the 60’s he began
visiting the great wine cellars of Europe committed to finding out what
made the great wines of the world great.
Constantly pushing to make better and better wines, a story from the
early days recounts the simmering tension between him and lesser known
brother Peter. One day the two ended up in a fist fight with Peter being
asked to leave the business.
He had his hands in everything, involved in projects like Opus (a partnership
with Baron Phillipe de Rothschlid) whose debut vintage sold at auction
for a whopping $24,000 a case. Mondavi had relationships with Frescobaldi
(Italy), Vina Errazuriz, (Chile) and Rosemount, (Australia) just to
name a few.
When wine and alcohol came under fire in the 80’s, Robert Mondavi
spearheaded research on their health benefits.
Ever the philanthropist, Mr. Mondavi donated $35 million to the University
of California at Davis; $25 million to establish the Robert Mondavi
Institute for Food and Wine Science and another $10 million to finish
the campus performing arts center.
By 2000 the Robert Mondavi Corp. had begun to feel financial constraints,
eventually agreeing to sell the entire corporation for more than $1
billion. Then in 2005 at the age of 92 Mondavi began his final project,
making California cabernet with his son Tim and his daughter Marcia.
Interestingly, he ended where he began...making wine with his family.
